Hiking shoes and boots

A sturdy and comfortable pair of boots or shoes is essential when you're out in nature. No matter the season or the weather, there's an optimal shoe for you and your adventure. Here are 6 tips on what to consider when finding your new favorites. You'll soon be ready to enjoy every step as you hike in the forest and mountains.

6 important things to consider when buying hiking shoes

1. What kind of environment will you be in?

The nature and environment where you'll be hiking affects the type of footwear you need. Will it be dry or wet? Are you going to hike in the mountains or on winding forest paths? Think about what needs the environment creates.

2. Temperature

Of course, it makes a big difference if it's hot or cold outside. You’ll want to keep your feet warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Regardless of the temperature, it's important that the shoes are breathable, so that your feet stay as dry and fresh as possible.

3. How far will you go?

The duration of your adventure also plays a role in your choice of footwear. If you are carrying a heavy backpack and will be hiking for many days, it is important to have sturdy boots that provide good shock absorption.

4. Fit and size

Everyone's feet are unique. The important thing is that you find a shoe that fits your feet. Make sure they wrap around your foot so that your foot muscles can relax and you have good arch support. You also want to make sure you have enough room for your toes, at least 1cm in front of the longest toe.

5. Sole with good grip

You should feel steady and comfortable, no matter where and on what surface you're hiking. The sole of your hiking shoes should have a rough pattern but also be somewhat flexible so you feel contact with the ground. If you're hiking in very hilly terrain, it's good if the sole isn't too high, as this reduces the risk of stepping wrong or twisting your ankle.

6. Don't forget the socks

Whatever boots or shoes you choose for your adventure, the socks you wear are just as important. Go for a wool sock, they are both odor-resistant and keep you warm even if they get wet. It's also a good idea to wear two pairs of socks, one thinner and one slightly thicker on top, as this prevents shoe chafing.
