From casual jogger to long-distance runner

Do you want to elevate your running game?   Thinking about running a multi-mile trail race can be thrilling and inspiring, yet slightly daunting.   Here, Oscar Pacheco Engelbrektsson, one of Outnorth’s ambassadors for the Outnorth Trailtour 2026*, shares his running journey and how he transitioned from a casual runner to tackling challenging long-distance races.

Quick facts about Oscar:

What's your running story so far?

My running journey really began in adulthood when I had the opportunity to represent Outnorth at the Craft Idre Fjällmaraton. From running 5km in about 25 minutes, I started training with more focus to overcome the mental and physical demands of 45km trail running. Despite a challenging first race with both pain and a trip to the emergency room, finishing gave me the taste for more. The next year, I ran five half marathons, both on roads and trails, and saw a clear boost in endurance, technique, and strategy – the dream of returning to Idre for redemption is still alive.

What inspired you to step up your running game and start entering races?

It all kicked off on a rainy Monday when I impulsively signed up for the Idre Fjällmaraton after spotting an email about the Outnorth Trailtour. Suddenly, I was part of it, and that meant training had to begin! Registering for a race turned out to be the perfect motivation to elevate my running.

Do you have a favorite race you've participated in?

My absolute favorite race is Craft Idre Fjällmaraton—it’s hard to beat that special feeling of running in the mountains.   The physical challenge and technical sections are offset by the stunning scenery, making me forget I’m even running.

What does it take to run a race in the Trail Tour?

The key thing is determination, though a good pair of shoes is also helpful! A half marathon requires preparation, endurance, and mental toughness, but the Trail Tour offers generous cutoff times. Don’t be afraid to walk during parts of the race—it’s totally fine and part of the charm of trail running, where runners often cheer each other on along the way.

How do you elevate your running routine?

Focus on volume training: shorter sessions a few times a week (3-4 miles) with an emphasis on technique or intervals, complemented by a longer session (6-9 miles) on weekends. If you're a beginner, start with shorter distances—the key is regular outings and gradually increasing distance. Hill training is also key for hilly terrain, and practicing your hydration and fueling during longer runs is essential.

How do I know if I'm physically and mentally prepared for a long-distance race?

It’s about challenging yourself gradually and tuning into your body’s signals. Start with being comfortable running 3 miles, then 6 miles under an hour, and build from there. For a marathon, it’s good to have run at least 18 miles in advance. The aim is to enjoy the run and not feel completely worn out at the finish—give yourself ample time to prepare, it's worth it!

How do you stay motivated when things get tough?

Having something concrete to train for, like booking a race, gives me that extra push. Many find support in running groups where everyone encourages each other. Remember, it’s in challenging conditions like rain, mud, and wind that you build the resilience to finish even when it’s hard.

What’s your training schedule been like this spring?

Last winter, I focused on strengthening my core and legs at the gym, which is crucial for avoiding injuries and handling lateral strain in trail running. Since February, I've switched to my regular running schedule, with shorter runs during the week and a longer one on the weekend.

Planning to register for an Outnorth trail tour race in 2026, which do you recommend?

Both Torekov-Båstad and Bohusläns Bästa are breathtakingly beautiful races that I highly recommend. However, running from Nipfjället to Städjan in Idre offers an unmatched and unique experience.
