How do I choose the right running backpack?

As more people discover trail running and ultra running, the demand for running backpacks and running vests increases. With a running backpack or vest, you can conveniently carry water, energy and the equipment you need for your particular adventure. But the range of running backpacks and vests is big, which can make it difficult to find the right one. In order to guide you correctly, this guide will take a closer look at; how much pack volume you need, which functions that are important to you and whether you should choose a running backpack or vest.

What to consider when choosing a running backpack

  • There are two different models to choose from – running backpacks and running vests
  • The amount of packing needed determines the size of the backpack
  • Water, energy and equipment that you need quick access to should be stored on the front or side. Other equipment can be placed in a larger compartment on the back

Pack volume

Start by thinking about your needs. There is a big difference running for 90 minutes and needing to bring water, energy and a phone compared to a twelve-hour long ultra race. Think about how long you'll be running and how much gear you'll need to bring.

Up to 2 hours: For shorter runs a pack volume of 1.5-5 litres is suitable. You can bring a wind jacket, phone, water and energy without any problems. If you want minimal packing, it can also be an option to look for a hip bag  instead of a running backpack or vest.

Over 3 hours: For slightly longer runs, a running backpack or vest with a pack volume of 6–10 liters is suitable. You then have room for more clothes, equipment and liquid/energy/food for the longer adventures. This is a suitable size for those aiming for a mountain marathon or similar race where it is mandatory to carry some equipment, water and energy.

Ultratrail and off-trail adventures: For long runs in all weathers and terrains, we recommend a running backpack or vest with a pack volume of over ten liters. Here you will find space for both warm and windproof clothing, other equipment and water/energy/food. This size is also suitable for those who run and commute to work.

If you participate in long races, the race management often inform what is mandatory to bring and what they recommend.

Functional running backpacks and vests

Functions

No matter what pack volume you're looking for, you'll find several options to choose from. Now you need to think about which functions are important to you;

  • How many compartments do you need? How should they be positioned and how do you want to be able to open them?
  • Do you want to bring water on your back in a bladder or in bottles on your chest? Or both?

Where you choose to place your water is a matter of preference, but keep in mind that it affects weight distribution. Two liters of water on your back can give a slightly back-heavy feeling and vice versa if you carry it on the front. Things you need quick access to should be stored on the front or side. Other equipment can be placed in a larger compartment on the back. Many long distance runners carry poles and want to be able to attach them to the backpack when not in use.

Fit

When you compare models, you will notice that there are both running vests and running backpacks that cover your needs. A vest fits tighter on the body and has wider shoulder straps for best running comfort. A backpack fits a little looser, can have a larger packing volume and works just as well in everyday life as it does on the track.

The vests are usually available in several sizes and sometimes in special women's and men's models for the best fit. Many are elastic so that the fit will be good regardless of clothes and how much packing you bring. If you choose a backpack, you adjust the fit with the help of straps. The perfect running back pack or vest fits close to the back, chest and shoulders and above all feels comfortable. Keep in mind that it needs to fit tightly when you run!

Good luck with your choice of running backpack or running vest!
