What is ultralight backpacking?
Ultralight backpacking is all about minimising the weight of your gear. The purpose can vary, for example because you want to move faster or because it makes your hike more enjoyable.
The best tips for ultralight backpacking:
- Choose lightweight equipment: Invest in ultralight and compressible
versions of tent, sleeping bag, and cooking equipment to reduce
pack weight. Focus on what weighs the most, that's where you can
save the most weight. A rule that is often used is “3-for-3”. This means
that the tent, backpack and sleeping bag should not exceed 3 kg together. - Pack smart: Choose multifunctional products that can be used for
multiple purposes. Use packing bags to organise and compress your pack. - Minimise unnecessary items: Go through your packing list carefully and
eliminate anything that is not absolutely necessary. Depending on what
your hike looks like, you might not need a tent? But remember not to skimp
on safety. - Adapt your outfit: Choose clothes that are light, quick-drying and functional.
Avoid cotton garments that retain moisture. - Plan your food: Choose energy-rich and light food that is easy to prepare
on the trail. For example, you can use ready-made meals and snacks that
require minimal water and cooking. - Water: Make sure you have access to enough water, but choose lightweight
options such as water purification pills or filters instead of carrying large
amounts of water. Find out where on your hiking trail there is a water supply
for refilling. - Practice and put your equipment to the test: Practice packing and
carrying your ultralight gear before embarking on long hikes. Test your
equipment during short trips to make sure you have the right things with you.
