If you are an outdoor person, you know that one of the most important items of clothing to have in your wardrobe is the base layer. Look out for the material weight in g/m2 to find the right base layer for you, this is a measure of how thick the material is. A material weight of around 100 g/m2 is thin, which is suitable for training or hiking in summer whereas a base around 200 g/m2 is thicker and thus suitable for activities in colder weather. At Outnorth, you will find base layers in several different materials from brands such as Aclima, Devold and Icebreaker.

Which base layer suits you?

The first thing you have to think about when choosing a base layer is where you will use it. Should you wear it when you're at the playground with the kids, when it's a little cold outside? Or are you going out skiing on the ski slopes? Choose materials based on the intensity of the activity and how cold you think it will be.

Merino wool – nature's own insulation

The classic merino wool has some incredible properties that cannot be found in any other material. First of all, it breathes very well, which is important for keeping you dry when you're out in wet weather. Merino wool can actually absorb moisture by as much as 30 % of its own weight, further helping to keep you dry. It also has some great heating properties! Namely, an air space is created between your skin and the base layers, which is heated by body heat, which in turn prevents the heat from being conducted away from your body. It keeps warm even if you have become damp, and it neither smells nor itches! Merino wool base layers is best suited for cooler temperatures and activities with low to medium intensity.

Synthetic base layers – keeps you dry

A synthetic base layer is optimal for high-intensity activities where you move a lot and sweat. The synthetic material ensures that moisture and sweat are transported away from your skin and out. This way you avoid getting overheated or wet and cold. Synthetic base layers do not absorb the moisture, like for example cotton. Because it doesn't absorb liquid, it also dries very quickly when it gets wet. Remember that synthetic base layers does not warm as much as wool! It is incredibly important that the undergarment has a tight fit for it to function optimally. Synthetic base layers is best suited for high-intensity activities, such as running and skiing.

Wool & Synthetic blend – the best of both worlds

Blend base layers are incredibly good for high-intensity activities in cold climates, such as alpine or cross-country skiing. The mixture of synthetic and wool means that you get all the best properties in one and the same garment. The synthetic material transports moisture away and provides a good fit, while the wool keeps you warm and makes it incredibly comfortable to wear.

Remember that most base layers, synthetic and wool, can also be used as a training garment on its own – this way you get two garments in one.
