Thermoses
We all know what it is, that container that keeps your coffee hot. The technology of maintaining temperature with a vacuum is actually a very old invention. At the end of the 19th century, James Dewar discovered that if you have a glass bottle with two inner layers and remove the air between them to create a vacuum, it has a very good heat insulating ability. It can keep both heat and cold. Today, the technology is the same, but we have seen significant development in its applications.
Food Thermos
A good way to transport hot food on a trip is in a food thermos. It works on the same vacuum principle, but the container is a bit larger and has a wider opening so you can easily add and remove food. Essentially, a food thermos serves as a mix between a lunchbox and a refrigerator-heat cabinet. It works just as well for keeping soup hot as it does for keeping a fruit salad cold. A hot tip is to preheat the thermos by filling it with boiling water and letting it stand for a few minutes before adding hot food; this way, it keeps the heat even better. Similarly, you can cool it down with ice water if you are going to carry chilled food.
Thermos Mug
A thermos mug is a smaller mug designed for hot or cold drinks. Most thermos mugs keep the drink hot for 4 hours and cold for up to 12 hours. A common use is to take coffee to work, at least for us here at Outnorth.
