Avalanche Equipment

Fresh powder and off-piste skiing are a big part of the attraction of snow sports such as skiing and snowboarding. You can also end up in some dangerous areas on a hike. To help manage the risks that come with it, you need the right equipment, thorough training and a good understanding of the weather and mountain environment. Here we summarize the most important pieces of avalanche equipment. This equipment will not prevent you from being caught in an avalanche, but it will give you the highest chance of survival if an accident occurs. Be aware that avalanche equipment is only as good as your knowledge and skill in using it. To improve your safety in an avalanche risk area, you should carry the following 3 things with you.

  • Avalanche transceiver
  • Avalanche probe
  • Avalanche shovel

Avalanche transceivers

If you are buried by an avalanche, the avalanche transceiver transmits electronic signals that can be picked up during searches. So be sure to always activate the transmitter before you go off-piste. The transmitter is best worn under your clothes so you don't risk dropping it.

Avalanche probe

An avalanche probe is a collapsible stick that resembles a tent pole and can be used to probe buried avalanche victims. They are usually made of aluminum or carbon fiber for low weight and strength.

Avalanche shovel

An avalanche shovel is necessary to test snow conditions and to be able to quickly excavate victims. An avalanche shovel is also an important tool for weather protection in snow if you for some reason are left out overnight. Most have detachable handles or telescopic handles for easy packing. Aluminum blades are lightweight yet strong.
