Knives

The knife is one of our oldest and most important tools. It's a multipurpose tool used for hunting, skinning animals, and crafting. Among our most crucial inventions, the knife ranks high, alongside the wheel and fire. The first knives were made of flint, bone, and similar materials, but we have come a long way since then. Over time, new materials have been used to craft knives, including bronze and later iron. Fundamentally, a knife is a tool with a cutting edge; what has really evolved is the edge itself. Indeed, there are many different types of knives for various purposes, but essentially, they differ in the types of edges suited for different situations.

Knife Maintenance

To maintain your knife's effectiveness, it needs to be treated properly. The first rule is to use the knife for its intended purpose: cutting. Avoid using it to pry things open or as a screwdriver; there are better tools for that. Keep your knife clean. Depending on the type of knife, the best way to clean it may vary, but often a gentle wipe with a soft cloth is sufficient. It is beneficial to oil/lubricate the knife to prevent rusting.

Sharpening Knives

Keep your knife sharp. It's riskier to slip and cut yourself with a dull knife than with a sharp one. Sharpening techniques vary by model, but the basics are divided into two steps:

  • Rough sharpening to shape and remove damage from the edge
  • Gradually use finer grits on your sharpening tool until you achieve a fine edge
  • Sharpening takes some practice but will extend the lifespan of your knife
